California School District saves money and the environment using Free Software

The Windsor Unified School District (WUSD) in California "saved green by going green by considering environmentally friendly technology solutions based on Free Software".

In an article at EdTech Magazine Heather Carver, technology and information services director, and her staff "have embarked on several new green initiatives designed to curtail the amount of waste that enters landfills and to cut down on energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gases". These include:

  • a new district Web site designed to help reduce the amount of paperwork the district generates
  • thin client computers, runnning Free Software, which are "easier to manage, more secure and... use about 40 percent less energy than desktop computers"
